The handouts for the Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology lecture are in pdf-format, which means that you need Acrobat Reader to open them. You can download Acrobat Reader from here.


The book used in the course is Davenport / Hannahs: Introducing Phonetics and Phonology, Third Edition, which is available at Bücherladen Zentrum, Schönberggasse 2, 8006 Zürich. 


At the bottom of this page there are several links to other pages of interest, such as downloads of phonetic fonts for your PC or MAC, an  IPA chart in pdf-format, and a website where you can listen to the sounds of the IPA.

Phonetics Fonts

The best place to download phonetics fonts from is the website of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. The most convenient font is IPA Encore or Doulos Sil.

 

The Sounds of the IPA

On the website of the University of Victoria you can listen to most of the Sounds of the IPA.
